Name: Serph
Canon: Digital Devil Saga
Canon Point: Post 1st EGG visit
Age: Technically ~5, but appears to be around early/mid-20s.

Backstory: Two games worth

Personality:
One of the first things one notices upon meeting Serph is how quiet he is. Rarely does he speak, usually allowing others around him to converse freely without interruption as he listens. He usually prefers to express himself with action but when he does talk Serph is direct and blunt in his speech, as if words are a valuable resource to be used sparingly.

With such wallflower tendencies, it can be difficult to believe he is a leader. But his silence masks the fact he is always listening and trying to understand the perspective of others in a discussion, absorbing information before making decisions without hesitation. His ability to keep his cool no matter the situation and his dogged pursuit of Nirvana, the fabled paradise where there is no fighting, is why others have looked to him for his unfaltering, unflinching guidance. Even in the face of crimes against his people, even when things get personal, he never lets emotions get the better of him, maintaining an unflappable bearing where he never lashes out in anger, even when people talk shit about him to his face. To some, that is a comfort. To others, his refusal to take an eye for an eye if it doesn't serve their purposes makes him weak. But as a leader, he cannot afford to make impulsive decisions; every decision he makes will have consequences both good and bad for his people, the responsibility falling squarely on his shoulders. And all that he does, it has always been for the good of his people, for his comrades. He has always fought on the front lines alongside his friends, choosing to lead from the front and never from behind.

In truth he is an AI, originally created in the image of the real life Serph by a lonely girl named Sera. As Sera was a sickly girl with strange powers, she had created a virtual world and other AIs (also based on the people around her) to keep her company and make her happy... and was forced to repurpose it into a military simulation. And so Serph and the other AIs had their memories wiped and from then, all they knew was a world ruled by violence called the Junkyard. Still, some fragments of memories from his life as a playtime companion remain, albeit extremely hazily, so occasionally he has a strange sense of sentimentality or nostalgia over things that don't exist in the Junkyard, or thoughts that appear in his mind with no discernible source, logic, or reason.

As a result of living in the Junkyard, which lacked even the most basic of phenomena like plants and animals, Serph is naive to elements of the 'real world'. Though he has since spent a little time outside the simulation with other humans, there are still many things he lacks knowledge and understanding of. For one, he has no concept of school other than it being a place you go to suffer. Government is a tribe where the devouring occurred daily and was called politics. Serph doesn't know anything about taxes. He sort of knows what a cat is. It may be hard to tell with his nigh expressionless face, but he holds a quiet curiosity regarding things he lacks knowledge and understanding in, willing to ask questions and try things without fear of looking the fool.

In fact having emotions is still a somewhat novel experience, being unable to put words to most of his feelings and struggling further to express them, erring on the side of silence. Combined with his general lack of expressiveness in his face and body language, he can seem inscrutable to all except those who know him well.

Still, because of most of his life was lived in the military simulation where he was locked in an endless war, he is unafraid of ruthlessness, of killing, and of doing what is difficult but necessary. He would rather speak a harsh truth, looking pain and suffering directly in the eye, than to soften the blow with gentler words. And while he understands deeply the inevitable losses as the result of his decisions, as a leader he cannot dwell on past regrets, instead taking action in the present that would lead him to the future he desires. He wavered only when there were more and more hints of him having committed a terrible sin in a half remembered past life, calling into question his own actions and purpose. But when the time came for him to pay the price, he paid it willingly, in blood.

Serph's greatest strength is to make his decisions unflinchingly and without regret, ready to bear the consequences as he keeps striding forward towards the Nirvana he envisions. And for those who want to follow him, Serph will do all in his power to bring them to a paradise where they can live in peace without suffering.

Powers/Abilities:
Serph will be retaining his own monster form, his demonic Atma named Varuna*, in addition to Route 666's monster form.

As Varuna he is stronger (but not wall-breakingly so; more along the lines of a person who lifts) and tougher than a human (equivalent of wearing armour), although fire hurts him more than other elements. It isn't immediately apparent, but hidden within Varuna's forearms are organic blades as sharp as a well honed sword, adding another arm's length to his reach when unsheathed.

Varuna is also capable of ice elemental magic, wielded either at a distance or up close as a breath attack.

Varuna also comes with a cannibalistic hunger, but I imagine the creatures encountered on the trip would sate it. Aside from slaking the hunger, eating creatures (or people..........) also has a mild healing effect, helping Serph to recover from minor wounds.

(I'm happy to adjust things if this feels like this is going over the 3 starting powers limit)

Other traits that Varuna has canonically but have been lost (for now):
  • Natural resistance to water and ice elemental magic.
  • Proper demon toughness; most demons became so tough that standard firearms hardly affect them.
  • Ability to use other magic spells.
* In game, the demon is called Varna. However, it has been confirmed that the correct name should have been Varuna.

Inventory: Just his clothes; he lost his handgun transferring to a new world again.

Game Plans: Serph thinks he's dead. And yet, he's alive aaaaand what do you mean people are turning into monsters and being told to seek Nirvana? It's almost like he's reincarnated into a similar but alternate universe. Good thing past experience will help him with managing all this, right? ...Right?

Basically, Serph's here to help people through the monsterising process and have a terrible time. But not as terrible a time as QDSAT!Serph.

Monster Choice:
I've narrowed options to either of the following three monsters:
  1. Celestial (getting the trait that makes him hate demons when his demon is an inseparable part of him would be messed up)
  2. Volare (turning to stone when his demon makes him immune to the canon stone disease would be ironic)
  3. Yokai (he was called by a codename silver fox once).
Vehicle Choice: A Toyota HiLux painted bright orange with the TOUGH quality.

(Note: There's a couple of mentions of being split in half/other half in my threads as I was TDMing a different canon point but it ultimately doesn't affect the overall read of Serph's personality and actions.)
